What is energy healing (reiki) for horses?
Energy healing (reiki) is a valuable therapy not only for people, but for animals too, and can have great results with horses. Energy is channelled through the hands of the therapist directly to the horse to activate the body’s natural ability to heal itself, releasing blocked energies, to support physical, mental and emotional challenges, illness and injury. Equine Reiki is non invasive and uses no pressure or manipulation. It is a holistic therapy treating the cause of the problem and not just the presenting condition. It heals the horses on many levels, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
Energy healing for horses helps to relieve a variety of conditions and challenges: from emotional, such as anxiety and past trauma (sometimes simply from having multiple owners or moving yards); to physical, including supporting injury recovery or chronic illness. It is a holistic approach; it not only addresses the physical body but the emotional, mental and spiritual health of the horse.
How can it help my horse?
Acute illness, pre- and post-surgery, wounds and lameness are some of the physical problems that respond to healing energy. This form of treatment often generates rapid improvement in the horse. Emotional problems such as separation anxiety, pain memory, box vices, extreme spookiness and any ridden or on the ground behavioural problems can respond extremely well too; energy healing excels in its ability to address mental and emotional issues in horses It can also be useful in treating travel stress and digestive problems, as well as for settling mares who are new mothers. It is also beneficial as a horse approaches the end of its life, as it can provide comfort and support in the transition from this world.
Every horse can benefit from reiki, from competition horses to field companions, and healthy and happy horses can benefit too! They will enjoy a deeply relaxing treatment that will enhance their general well-being.
How does it work?
Energy healing is safe and will never harm an animal. Since healing is a non-invasive, the process of giving healing occurs without force; without creating additional inflammation or damage to the body.
Energy flows through the body of a horse in good health much like an electric current. However, a number of factors can interfere with this flow, including physical injuries, trauma, dietary/environment/routine changes, emotional problems, training issues, or a combination of problems. Any blockage of energy can result in physical, emotional or behavioural problems. Horses are particularly sensitive and quickly pick up on the healing a practitioner offers through hands-on or even hands-off means. It is extremely useful in conjunction with traditional veterinary care, as it can help horses recover faster, and work alongside treatment or medication. Energy healing for horses permeates deeply; chronic tension that has been held in the tissues of the body releases, working towards a state of balance and harmony. This increase in the life flow of energy in the horse’s body strengthens their life force and allows for the body to continue healing itself over time.
My journey and experience
Reiki; my horse's healing journey; equine energy healing training and beyond..
My journey began when I trained in reiki 10+ years ago to aid my own healing, and then five years ago I decided to train in Quantum Touch (which is very similar to reiki) as my horse had complex health needs and I wanted to support his healing journey, so I decided to learn a second modality to broaden my skillset. His response was amazing - he absolutely loved it and it supported his many physical and emotional challenges. When it was time for him to grow his wings I decided that giving healing to horses was something I wanted to continue for the rest of my life, and this is now his legacy, as he set me on this path. I most recently trained with the Healing Animals Organisation (HAO) to gain a diploma in Equine Healing and Communication, and become a registered HAO healer . I now have an extensive toolkit of techniques along with the knowledge and experience to enable me to give energy healing to both equines and their guardians or riders.
